Do the Yankees have betting value?
The Yankees are the betting favorite among all five of the referenced sportsbooks to win the World Series in 2020. The strongest competition comes from the Dodgers. With their trade to acquire Mookie Betts and David Price from the Red Sox in a shocking deal, sportsbooks point strongly toward the public predicting a Yankees and Dodgers World Series.
That comes as no surprise with the Yankees signing off on the biggest offseason move prior to the Betts trade. Gerrit Cole signed with New York for a $324 million contract that filled what many thought was the Yankees biggest need. It was mostly quiet for New York in additions outside of the Cole signing.
With the Red Sox trading Betts, the path to the postseason appears even simpler for the Yankees in 2020, which pushed the World Series odds down. With Boson losing its star player and manager Alex Cora amid the Astros cheating scandal, the Yankees usual AL East rival appears to have taken a major step back after an already disappointing 2019. At +2500 on DraftKings to win the World Series, Boston is third in the division behind the Tampa Bay Rays at +2200. The Toronto Blue Jays (+10000) and Baltimore Orioles (+75000) are longshots for a World Series win.
Gerrit Cole Specials
DraftKings Sportsbook has a special section for Gerrit Cole odds in the 2020 season. Among those odds are recording 15 strikeouts in a game (-137), recording 20 strikeouts in a game (+2500) and throwing a no-hitter (+2000). His over/under for strikeouts is at 273.5 and his over/under for wins is at 16.5. Cole won 20 games and struck out 326 batters in 2019 with the Astros. His 2019 season high in strikeouts was 15 against the Mariners in September. His career high in strikeouts is 16 in 2018.
Cole is a huge favorite to win the AL Cy Young at +275 after being edged out by teammate Justin Verlander in 2019. Verlander (+700) is just behind Chris Sale (+650) to finish out the three favorites for the award.
MVP and Home Run Leader Odds
Aaron Judge comes in at +1000 to win the AL MVP on DraftKings right behind annual frontrunner Mike Trout (+150). Judge faces the tough task of keeping up with Trout’s staggering numbers that continue to get better every year. If he can stay healthy, which has been an issue after his rookie campaign, Judge has shown the power and ability to get on base enough to challenge for an MVP. Giancarlo Stanton (+3300), Gleyber Torres (+4000) and Cole (+5000) headline other Yankees in the mix.
Stanton is the favorite to lead the league in home runs at +900. Despite just three home runs in an injury-riddled 2019, Stanton showcased enough to bettors in his 38-home run 2018 with the Yankees to have the lowest odds to lead the league this year. Judge comes in at +1800 while Torres is the third highest Yankee at +2500.
