Safe to say, no other state with legal sports betting has blasted out of the starting blocks quite like New York.
With online sportsbooks in New York reporting a combined $194.5 million in handle for the week ending Aug. 28, NY sports betting eclipsed $10 billion in accepted wagers in less than eight months.
While the weekly handle took a dip after four straight weeks of climbing, it’s still worthy of celebration. Especially with football season kicking off.
Ready for some football: NY sports betting reaches $10 billion
College football has started. Week 1 of the NFL season is a week away. This is the time of year proponents of legal online sports betting in New York have waited for.
But celebrations have already begun.
Since launching the first NY betting apps in January 2022, New York has totaled $10.1 billion in accepted bets. All in under eight months.
Nearby New Jersey has taken in over $29 billion in wagers since legal sports betting went live in 2018. Already, New York is more than a third of the way there, thanks in large part to the Empire State going over $1 billion in monthly handle in each of its first six months.
But as Sen. Joe Addabbo told Legal Sports Report, after the expected dip in NY sports betting action during the summer, New York should see a major boost in the coming weeks.
“I don’t have to say it because others have said it: NY has solidified its place as the capital of online sports betting in the nation, which is great. But it’s a question of sustainability.”
Breaking down NY sportsbooks for Aug. 28
No doubt, online sportsbooks in New York eagerly await the NFL and college football seasons to get into full swing. But FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook are rolling into fall.
As has been the case for several months, FanDuel Sportsbook NY reported the top weekly handle in New York. Its total of $83.7 million in accepted wagers marked the fourth straight week exceeding $80 million. FanDuel has eclipsed that mark in all but four weeks since going live in early January. And even in those four weeks, FanDuel never dipped below $63 million.
For perspective, other than DraftKings New York, only Caesars Sportsbook NY has gone over $60 million in weekly handle. And that last came in March.
