Thanks to the New York Lottery, one Long Island woman will get $1,000 weekly for the rest of her life. Not a bad gig.

But she nearly missed it with the winning NY lottery ticket days from expiration.

The New York Lottery announced recently that the woman, Genine Plummer from Islip, claimed a second-tier Cash4Life prize only a few days before it was set to expire. That means she had the ticket for a year without realizing it was a winning combo.

“I’m just in shock with everything and amazed,” Plummer said. “I am overwhelmed.”

The lottery numbers were from a drawing on May 26, 2022, with the winning combinations of 03-09-33-57-58 and Cash Ball 01.

The ticket went unclaimed for over a year. Then, on May 11, 2023, the New York Lottery issued a press release saying the unclaimed ticket would expire shortly unless someone came forward to claim it.

That’s when Plummer went back and checked her lottery tickets. She found the winning ticket – which she had purchased from a ShopRite in Bay Shore – in her collection.

How NY Lottery’s Cash4Life prizes work

The NY Lottery’s Cash4Life draw game prize is a second-tier prize with two payout options for the winner to choose from.

Winners can select a minimum $1 million for-life annuity or a one-time lump sum. In this case, Plummer chose to get her prize in the form of annual payouts of $33,852 post-tax.

“I’m just in shock with everything and amazed,” Plummer, a retired Postal Service employee, said. “I am overwhelmed.”

The CASH4LIFE drawings occur daily, and winners have up to one year from the date of the drawing to claim the prize.

Plummer advises other lottery players to check their tickets – “especially if you have many tickets on hand.”
