New York’s public schools and Lottery retailers received a combined $38 million from the Powerball jackpot run that ended with an $847 million win in New Jersey, according to Finger Lakes Daily News, citing New York State Gaming Commission figures.

New Yorkers bought $92.6 million in Powerball tickets across 36 drawings during the nearly three-month run. The state also sold three $1 million second-prize tickets.

Ticket sales generated $32.4 million for schools

The Gaming Commission reported that the run produced $32.4 million in Lottery profits for New York’s public schools. Retailers earned another $5.6 million in sales commissions.

Those figures separate the two statewide beneficiaries of ticket purchases: public education receives Lottery profits, while participating retailers earn commissions on sales.

Commission Chairman Brian O’Dwyer said the large jackpots helped generate revenue for public education while also benefiting Lottery retailers.

Under state law, all New York Lottery profits support public education. Since its inception, the Lottery has contributed nearly $93.4 billion to public schools.

Three $1 million tickets sold across New York

Although the top jackpot was won across the state line, New York had three second-prize Powerball tickets worth $1 million each during the run.

The winning tickets were purchased at these locations:

  • Tops Markets in East Amherst, in western New York.
  • Kings 86 C-Store in Brooklyn.
  • Hannaford in Highland.
