New York’s sports betting market is seeing its usual NFL-season lift, with football helping drive some of the state’s biggest monthly wagering totals.
According to Spectrum News, citing New York State Gaming Commission data, mobile sports betting brings in about $2 billion monthly in the state. The report said NFL months have produced the top monthly wagering handles across New York in each of the last three years outside of March, when college basketball betting typically peaks.
NFL season brings back futures, parlays, and player props
Carter Pointon, president of Syracuse University’s Sportsbook Analytics Club, told Spectrum News that the start of the season pushes bettors toward futures wagers such as division winners and playoff teams. He also said football is the most popular sport among club members, who use mock betting only.
The report said casual bettors are also gravitating toward higher-profile bet types, including anytime touchdown scorer bets, two-plus touchdown scorer props, and parlays. Simon Weiss, founder of sports betting consulting company Make Vegas Pay, said those “fun and points driven” wagers tend to attract the average bettor.
Weiss also warned that making money consistently is difficult, especially in September and early October, when bettors may still be reacting to limited information from the new season.
Advertising and more standalone games may add to betting volume
Pointon told Spectrum News that sportsbook promotion during NFL broadcasts remains hard to miss, pointing specifically to DraftKings and FanDuel. That visibility may help explain why football continues to dominate betting attention as the season opens.
The report also noted the NFL schedule itself may be adding more wagering opportunities. After expanding its holiday slate in recent years with Christmas games, the league has now added a Thanksgiving Eve primetime game this season. Weiss said standalone primetime matchups are good for betting volume.
Spectrum News also reported that Pointon and Weiss see today’s NFL betting environment as potentially more robust than ever, pointing to the league’s 17-game schedule and the presence of newer prediction-market platforms such as Polymarket and Kalshi in New York.
For New York players, the latest trend is less about a sudden change in the market than a familiar seasonal spike: when the NFL returns, betting activity tends to rise with it. As the season continues, state handle reports will show how strong that surge becomes.
