New York mobile sportsbooks opened the 2026 NFL season with a record $594.6 million in Week 1 handle, but that betting volume did not translate into a strong win for operators. Gross gaming revenue came in at $16.96 million, with the statewide hold at 2.9%.

According to the reported figures, handle rose 12.7% from the 2025 opening week. Revenue, however, fell 44.5% year over year and 62% from the previous week, showing how quickly sportsbook results can swing when outcomes favor bettors.

Bettor-friendly results squeezed sportsbook revenue

The 2.9% hold was the third-lowest mark for an NFL regular-season week since mobile betting launched in New York. The week’s game results help explain why.

Eight favorites covered the spread on opening Sunday. The Jets and Giants both won outright as underdogs, and nine of 13 games went over the total. Joey Feazel, lead football trader for Caesars Sportsbook, summed it up this way: “Favorites, overs, and touchdown-scorers combined to create a bettor-friendly trifecta on opening Sunday.”

For players, the takeaway is straightforward: a record betting week for the market does not necessarily mean sportsbooks had a strong revenue week. Handle measures total dollars wagered, while hold shows how much operators kept after paying winning bets.

Kalshi, FanDuel and broader demand added to a busy opening week

The same report said Kalshi posted nearly $702 million in NFL-related trading volume for Week 1, up 211% from the same period last year. Including combination contracts, Kalshi’s total volume topped $1 billion. Its highest-volume game was Cowboys-Giants on Sunday night at $112.8 million.

FanDuel also reported its highest number of active sportsbook users for any NFL regular-season Sunday, while GeoComply logged a peak of 8,619 geolocation transactions per second.

Those figures point to a high-traffic start to the NFL season across betting and event-contract platforms. Eilers & Krejcik Gaming projects about $40 billion in combined NFL wagering and trading volume nationwide for the full 2026 season.

What New York bettors should watch next

Week 1 showed that player-friendly outcomes can cut operator revenue even when betting activity hits a record. As more weekly data comes in, New York bettors can watch whether handle stays near these levels and whether sportsbook hold rebounds after the opening slate. As always, bet responsibly and within your limits.
