Oklahoma players on Modo and Stake.us are facing access changes before a new state law takes effect on Nov. 1.
Modo has already begun limiting Sweeps Coin activity in the state, while Stake.us told customers its platform will no longer be available in Oklahoma beginning Oct. 30. The changes come ahead of SB 1589, which expands Oklahoma’s gambling statutes to address online casino-style games and dual-currency systems.
Modo and Stake.us set Oklahoma deadlines
Modo said Oklahoma customers could no longer purchase Gold Coin packages that include promotional Sweeps Coins starting Oct. 1. The company also stopped accepting alternative methods of entry from Oklahoma if they were postmarked after Oct. 1.
According to the company, sweepstakes gameplay and redemptions will remain available through Nov. 1. After that date, Modo intends to keep Gold Coin gameplay available in Oklahoma, along with its Boxes product.
Stake.us has taken a broader step. It said its platform will no longer be available in Oklahoma beginning Oct. 30. The company told customers they may lose the ability to play, purchase or participate in promotions depending on their account details, though they will still be able to log in and redeem remaining balances.
What SB 1589 changes in Oklahoma
SB 1589 takes effect Nov. 1 after Oklahoma lawmakers overrode Gov. Kevin Stitt’s veto. The Senate voted 34-10 to override, and the House followed 68-19.
The law expands the state’s gambling statutes to address online casino games involving money, credits or other “representatives of value,” including dual-currency systems in which virtual currency can be exchanged for prizes, cash or cash equivalents.
Stitt said in his veto message that the bill’s scope was too broad and could create criminal liability beyond its intended targets. But the override means the measure will now become law, with felony-level consequences for violations. The source material also notes the law may extend to businesses involved in supporting or facilitating covered online casino games.
What players should watch next
For Oklahoma customers, the immediate dates are Oct. 30 for Stake.us availability and Nov. 1 for SB 1589 and Modo’s current sweepstakes timeline. Another open question is whether other sweepstakes casino operators serving Oklahoma will also restrict or exit the state before the law takes effect.
