FanDuel said some Daily Fantasy Sports users were unable to create or edit NFL Week 1 lineups Sunday after site and app issues surfaced about 90 minutes before kickoff. The operator said the platform eventually came back, but not before the 1 p.m. games had started and those contest lineups had locked.
The outage prompted complaints from users who said they had reserved contest entries but could not finish or adjust rosters before kickoff. By Monday afternoon, FanDuel said it had issued refunds or credits to impacted customers based on net losses, though it did not disclose how many users were affected or the total amount paid out.
What FanDuel said about the disruption
According to FanDuel, some functions on its DFS site and app stopped working shortly before Sunday’s NFL Week 1 slate. Users reported website and app error messages while trying to add or change players.
A FanDuel spokesperson said, “A lot of users were having issues” and added that “not all of those issues were mitigated before kickoff.” In a later public statement to DFS customers, the company said the issue was “unacceptable” and that it had refunded the net losses of impacted customers.
FanDuel also gave an example of how compensation worked: a customer with $10 in entries who won $5 would receive a $5 refund. The company said all refunds and credits had been issued by Monday afternoon.
Compensation drew criticism from users and a rival
Not all reaction focused on the outage itself. Analyst Josh Engleman criticized the compensation on X, saying some users received bonus cash rather than withdrawable cash. In one post, he wrote: “Instead of giving you back your $750 in real money, here’s $750 in bonus cash that is only valid for 7 days.”
DraftKings’ official X account also took aim at its competitor during the disruption, posting that a DFS player’s “home should probably be somewhere that treats DFS like it matters.”
What players still do not know
Several details remain unclear. FanDuel said the issue appeared widespread based on social media reports, but as of Monday afternoon it had not identified a specific number of impacted users. The company also had not disclosed what caused the outage, how many entries or contests were affected, or the total amount of refunds and credits issued.
For DFS players, the key takeaway is straightforward: the lineup-editing problem lasted into lock for at least some Sunday contests, and FanDuel’s make-good was tied to net losses rather than a full public accounting of the disruption.
