Tioga Downs Casino Resort will hold its annual dachshund races on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7, adding a crowd-favorite side event to a 10-race harness card in Nichols, New York.

According to the event details, 28 dachshunds will sprint roughly 60 feet. Preliminary heats are scheduled after the second, third and fourth harness races, with the championship heat following race five. Live harness racing begins at 12:30 p.m.

Bentley returns looking for a fifth straight win

The best-known entrant is Bentley, a 5-year-old brown dachshund owned and trained by Emily Krise. Bentley has won the Tioga Downs event four consecutive years and will try to make it five on Monday.

Andrew Demsky, Tioga Downs’ regional director of racing, said the dog races have become a recurring tradition for guests.

> “Our dog races have become a favorite tradition among our guests at Tioga Downs, many of whom look forward to coming back each year for this event,” Demsky said.

Demsky also emphasized that the dachshund races are strictly for entertainment.

> “These races are all about fun — there’s no wagering involved. It’s just a chance for our guests to sit back, cheer on the dogs and enjoy some good-natured entertainment.”

Labor Day card includes harness racing and promotions

Beyond the dachshund races, Monday’s program includes 10 standardbred races at the track. Tioga Downs also plans several Labor Day promotions, including $1 hot dogs at Trackside Concessions.

The property is also running its Horse Play car giveaway contest, which gives guests a chance to qualify to win a 2025 Toyota Tacoma. In addition, Monday will mark the final race day of the season for the free trackside waterslide.

For visitors headed to Tioga Downs, the main takeaway is straightforward: the Labor Day program combines live harness racing with a non-wagering novelty event and a full slate of on-property entertainment.
