Buccherino is more likely to return to Belmont Park for an allowance race than run in a stakes race at Parx, trainer Alfredo Velazquez told Daily Racing Form.
The Parx-based 5-year-old finished third behind Paradise Valley and Commuted in the Grade 3 Bold Ruler at Belmont last weekend. Velazquez said he had expected more from the effort.
Velazquez questions Buccherino’s handling of the track
Velazquez said Buccherino did not seem to handle the track in the Bold Ruler. The trainer had expected him to make a move at the quarter pole, but instead saw him remain behind the pace.
“I don’t think he went along with the track,” Velazquez told Daily Racing Form.
Despite that assessment, an allowance at the same venue is the trainer’s preferred direction as he considers Buccherino’s next start.
Parx stakes and Elite Power among the alternatives
Two options at Buccherino’s home track are the $75,000 Let’s Give Thanks on Nov. 25 and the $75,000 Blitzen on Dec. 31. Velazquez said he would favor an allowance over those stakes if choosing between them.
“If the stakes are $75,000, it’s better to go for the allowances than to go in those races,” he said.
The Grade 3 Elite Power on Dec. 5 was described by Daily Racing Form as the most ambitious potential spot for Buccherino, though a Belmont allowance is more likely.
Velazquez said he plans to enter Buccherino as soon as he feels the horse is ready.
