Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway is one of New York’s largest Racino facilities. Yonkers Raceway was founded in 1899 as the Empire City Race Track. The half-mile standardbred harness racing track and attached Racino is owned by the five sons of Pittsburgh Steelers legendary owner Art Rooney. The Rooney family first bought the track in 1972.
Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway underwent a $225 million renovation in 2006 that was originally designed to include 7,500 slot machine games. The first phase saw 1,870 Video Lottery Terminals installed. A second phase added 120,000 square feet of gaming space in December 2006. That brought the total number of VLTs to 4,000. In March 2007, a the third phase was completed bringing the VLT total to 5,300.
Plus, another $50 million expansion in January 2013 added 66,000 square feet of gaming space, 700 VLTs, and two new restaurants.
In 2016 Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway sought a full gaming license but it was not granted. Plans to build a 400-room hotel, 5,000-seat multi-use arena, and a 2,500-space parking garage at a cost of $310 million were shelved.
