History of baccarat
Baccarat dates back at least to the 19th century and perhaps even further, with its origins usually traced to Europe where the game was especially popular in France and Italy. The game has become popular worldwide—from Macau to Las Vegas.
Many US casinos feature baccarat among their table games, including high-stakes baccarat games for high rollers. James Bond plays baccarat in Ian Fleming’s novel Casino Royale (the 2006 film adaptation changes the game to poker), one of many examples of baccarat in popular culture.
Expected online baccarat casinos in New York
As we look ahead to online baccarat’s arrival in New York, there are several popular operators already running NY online sportsbooks that we expect will offer casino games as well. Here are our top picks to offer baccarat for when NY legalizes online casinos.
All the sites below have good reviews and reputations in the states where they operate. They also feature a nice selection of baccarat games, making them top picks for online casino game players who favor baccarat.
BetMGM baccarat
The BetMGM Casino has a wide selection of slots and table games, including a number of different baccarat variants. The site features high-quality graphics and animation whether accessed via browser or mobile app. The casino offers a number of generous welcome bonuses and promotions, plus its M Life Rewards loyalty program.
The BetMGM Casino features several different baccarat variants, including “first person” baccarat games enabling players greater control over the game, variants like First Person Golden Wealth Baccarat and First Person Lightning Baccarat that include extra rounds in which multipliers can increase players’ winnings and special sports-themed baccarat games like NHL Baccarat. Players can also play Baccarat Live, a live dealer version of baccarat.
BetRivers baccarat
BetRivers Casino is another popular online site featuring a large variety of slot titles and table games, including baccarat. The site’s functionality earns high marks with many ongoing promos and welcome offers, plus the chance for baccarat players to participate in the iRush Rewards program.
Like BetMGM, BetRivers has a selection of different baccarat variants, including Baccarat IGT, the “first person” variants listed above, and live dealer baccarat.
Caesars baccarat
Caesars Casino is another online casino with plenty of options, including for baccarat players. The site has lots of bonuses, too, including some specific to baccarat.
For instance, Caesars Casino often has offers such as a $5 table game bonus for every $50 you wager at baccarat, meaning you can earn a bonus just for playing baccarat on the site. There are other promotions, too, as well as the famous Caesars Rewards program. The casino has a few baccarat variations, including standards like Baccarat Professional Series, plus Live Dealer Baccarat Dragon featuring the popular Dragon Bonus side bet.
DraftKings baccarat
DraftKings is best known for daily fantasy sports and sports betting, but DraftKings Casino has become a favorite in many states. How we select top baccarat online casinos
When we evaluate online casinos and what they offer New York baccarat players, there are certain factors we take into account before recommending them. These include:
- Game selection — The standard baccarat variant is by far the most popular, but it is always nice to have options. The sites listed above offer a nice selection of baccarat types, as well as different limits and ways to play (e.g., virtually or live dealer baccarat).
- Payouts — The sites discussed above feature fairly standard payouts and rules across the different baccarat variants, which means baccarat players will find the games play as expected. It is important to know an online baccarat game does not alter the rules too inordinately or in a way that makes the game less fair to the player.
- Site features — We recommend licensed and regulated sites not only because they are trustworthy but also because they tend to feature high-functioning, intuitively designed games with top-notch graphics, as well as smooth animation and sounds that evoke the immersive casino experience. All the baccarat games listed above do just that, including the live dealer iterations.
- Bonuses and promotions — New York sports bettors already know the above-listed operators offer plenty of generous bonuses and promotions with their online sportsbooks. They will do the same with their online casinos—another reason to recommend them.
Free online baccarat vs. real money baccarat
Many online baccarat sites feature “demo” or free versions that enable players to try out the game without risking their funds. Such an option is great for online baccarat players since, unlike blackjack or poker, many who are curious about baccarat may not be familiar with the rules. Playing baccarat online for free can prepare you for real money online baccarat games or even for a trip to the casino.

Choosing between free online baccarat games and real money games largely depends on whether you are ready to start wagering real money. With any type of gambling, you want to understand the risks involved. Whatever you choose, take time to learn how to play baccarat before you put any real money down.
How to play baccarat online in NY
Baccarat is a favorite table game for a couple of reasons. It is relatively easy to learn, and it is a casino game in which the house edge is low, comparatively speaking.
Like blackjack, baccarat is a card game in which two hands are compared with one another. The hand with the highest value wins, or the two hands can tie. In baccarat, the two hands belong to the player and the banker. You can bet on either to win, or you can even bet on a tie.
Here is a quick primer on baccarat gameplay and betting, followed by information about common bets and payouts.
Understanding online baccarat rules
Unlike in blackjack or poker, there really isn’t any decision-making involved when it comes to the hands that get dealt. Both the player and dealer start with two cards. Whether they “hit” or “stand” is predetermined by the rules, so there isn’t any choice involved.
Step 1: Place your bet (player, banker or tie)
The main decision you’ll make with each baccarat hand is whether to bet on the player to win, to bet on the banker to win, or to bet on a tie to occur. A tie is the least probable outcome, but it pays out the most if successful. The banker winning is slightly more likely than the player winning (as explained below). Therefore, a winning bet on the banker’s hand pays out a little less than a bet on the player winning.
Step 2: The deal (two cards each to the player and banker)
After bets are placed, the player and banker each receive two cards face up. The object of the game is to get a hand whose point value adds up as close to 9 as possible. Points are as follows:
- Aces = 1 point
- 2s through 9s = the rank (e.g., a deuce is 2, a five is 5 and so on)
- 10s and face cards = zero points
When adding points, if the hand adds up to more than 10, you drop the first digit. For example, a 9 and a 5 (adding up to 14) would have a point value of 4.
Step 3: Determining whether either the player or banker receives a third card
If the first two cards for either the player or banker total 8 or 9, that’s considered a “natural win” and the game ends right there with no third cards dealt to either hand. If either the player or banker has 8 or 9 and the other doesn’t, that’s a winning hand. If both have an 8 or both have a 9, that’s a tie. Either way, the hand ends there and the bets are settled.
If there is no natural win, the dealer looks at both hands to determine if either gets a third card.
First, the dealer looks at the player’s hand.
- If the player has 6 or 7, the player stands.
- If the player has 0 to 5, a third card is dealt.
That third card will change the player’s total. Say the player has that 9 and 5, meaning the total is 4 points. Then the third card is an 8. That would make the player’s final hand add up to 22 (9 + 5 + 8), which means the total value is 2.
Now the dealer determines whether the banker’s hand receives a third card. If the player stands, the banker will draw a third card with 0 to 5 and stand on 6 or 7. However, if the player draws a third card, the banker hits or stands depending on what that third card is according to the following guidelines:
- If the card is an ace, 9, 10 or face card, the banker draws with 0 to 3; stands with 4 to 7.
- If the card is an 8, the banker draws with 0 to 2; stands with 3 to 7.
- If the card is a 6 or 7, the banker draws with 0 to 6; stands with 7.
- If the card is a 4 or 5, the banker draws with 0 to 5; stands with 6 or 7.
- If the card is a 2 or 3, the banker draws with 0 to 4; stands with 5 to 7.
To go back to our example, the player’s third card was an 8, giving the player 22 or a point total of 2. Let’s say the banker received a king (worth zero) and a 6, making the banker’s hand worth 6. In that case, since the player’s third card is an 8, the banker would stand with that total of 6 (which is in the 3 to 7 range). The banker’s hand of 6 would be the winner, beating the player’s hand worth 2.
That sounds complicated, but the dealer always knows what to do. If you’re playing online, the game will automatically deal the third card to hands when the rules dictate it.
Step 4: Calculating hands and settling bets
Once the dealing is done, the hands are added up, and the winner is determined. The winning hand is the one closest to 9. If both hands are equal in value, that’s a tie. Once that’s figured out, the bets are settled, and it’s time for a new hand.
Common baccarat bets
As noted, the payouts are different depending on whether you bet on the player, the banker or a tie. Let’s show those common baccarat bets in a table that also displays payouts and information about probabilities and the house edge.
Baccarat Bets | Baccarat Payouts | Baccarat Bet Odds | House Edge |
---|---|---|---|
Player | 1-to-1 | 44.62% | 1.24% |
Banker | 1-to-1 (minus commission) | 45.86% | 1.06% |
Tie | 8-to-1 | 9.52% | 14.44% |
Notice that because of the rules about drawing a third card, the banker’s hand has a slight edge. This is why it pays out just a little less. The commission at most online casinos is 5%. Thus, if you bet $10 on the player’s hand and win, you win $10. But if you bet $10 on the banker’s hand and win, you win $9.50 ($10 minus the 5% commission).
If you bet on a tie and win, you win a payout of 8-to-1. In that case, on a $10 bet, you’d win $80. By the way, 8-to-1 is the standard payout on ties in online casino baccarat. However, at some baccarat casinos online, you might discover they pay 9-to-1 in which case the house edge tumbles to 4.8%. That’s still a lot, though actually not quite as big as the house edge in American Roulette.
Notice that the last column indicates the house edge on different bets. The house edge is calculated by comparing the payout to the chance of winning. With the player and banker bets, the house edge is quite small. But with bets on a tie, the house edge is quite large, which means not only is the tie bet a riskier one, but the house will enjoy a big advantage over time if you keep betting on ties.
Less common baccarat bets
Baccarat features side bets as well. These are a bit like the bets on ties. The payouts are big, but the chances of winning are relatively slim. These are like many side bets in real money blackjack insofar as you decide whether to place them before the deal.
- Player Pair — a bet that the player will start with two pairing cards; pays 11-to-1.
- Banker Pair — a bet that the banker will start with two pairing cards; pays 11-to-1.
- Either Pair — a bet that either the player or banker will start with a pair; pays 5-to-1.
- Perfect Pair — a bet that either the player or banker will start with two identical cards (same rank, same suit); pays 25-to-1.
Note that baccarat is played with multiple decks (usually eight decks), which makes it possible (though highly unlikely) to start with two identical cards.
As with bets on ties, the house has a big edge for all of these side baccarat bets. You are definitely taking a gamble when placing them.
Top online baccarat strategies
You can’t employ any strategy in baccarat regarding the drawing of cards or the actual play of a hand as in blackjack or poker. Even so, there are some useful baccarat strategies.
Understand the rules and payouts
Having read through the rules above, you should have a good idea of how the game plays. Again, remember the dealer knows when to deal third cards and how to settle the bets, so you don’t have to worry about those details. But do remember that even though betting on the banker pays a little less (1-to-1 minus what is usually a 5% commission) than betting on the player (1-to-1 without the commission), the banker’s hand always has a slightly better chance of winning. Also, the house edge is a little less on banker bets.
Avoid the tie bet and other side bets
While we’re on the subject of odds and payouts, smart baccarat players know not to bet on ties or the other side bets in the long term. You can make those bets for fun once in a while. But if you bet them every time, you will likely lose more chips than you will win.
Manage your bankroll
Understanding odds and payouts will help you manage your bankroll as well. Sticking with less risky bets will ensure your money lasts longer and improve your chances of winning. Whenever you sit down to play online baccarat, be aware of how much you are spending. Give yourself a limit so as not to gamble away more than you should.
All of these strategy tips fall under the heading of practicing responsible gambling. Never gamble in games in which you don’t know the rules. Also, avoid the pitfalls of problem gambling that affect many New York gamblers.
Baccarat tips for a better online experience
Let’s boil down all of our advice into a few quick tips guaranteed to help make your experience playing online baccarat more pleasant.
- Learn the rules, but don’t sweat memorizing all the different contingencies for drawing third cards (the dealer will handle that).
- Understand that all baccarat bets are not equal (e.g., the banker wins more often than the player).
- Know that betting on ties or other side bets are long shots in which the house has a big edge.
- Practice smart bankroll management, and never gamble with money you cannot afford to lose.
Find the best online baccarat sites in NY
Right now, New York lawmakers are contemplating the possibility of legalizing NY real money online casinos. When that happens, expect the major operators to launch in NY with sites featuring a variety of online baccarat games.
Meanwhile, you can play at sweepstakes casino sites that use virtual currencies in their games. Some of these sites feature table games, and while baccarat is rarely included among the options at present, these sites are always adding new games.
New York baccarat FAQ
Currently, you cannot win real money playing online baccarat in New York, although that could change soon as NY contemplates legalizing new NY online casinos to the already legal online sportsbooks in the state.
New York players willing to travel to New Jersey for real money online casinos will find sites like BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars, DraftKings, and FanDuel to be great choices for online baccarat.
Many of those above-listed sites feature demo versions that are free online baccarat games you can play. There are other free-to-play baccarat games online where you can get a feel for how the game plays.
Most online casinos offer frequent bonuses and promotions. Usually, whenever you earn site credits or bonus bets at an online casino, you can use them to play baccarat or any other game. Sometimes these bonus site credits might apply only to a specific game, or in the case of free spins must be used for slots. In other instances, bonuses might be reserved for users of mobile casino apps and not available on the web-based site. But often they can be used for baccarat. Read through the terms associated with any bonus to make sure.
