What are casino table games?
Table games can refer to any casino games played on a table. These include card games as well as classic casino favorites like roulette and craps. Essentially “table games” is a way to refer to all of the games on a casino’s main floor that aren’t slots.
Here’s a list of the most popular table games found in NY casinos:
- Let It Ride
- Mississippi Stud
- Pai Gow
- Three Card Poker
- Ultimate Texas Hold’em
Of course, there are many more table games than this, plus all the variants of those in the above list. You’ll also often find casinos offering electronic table games where you can play the same game on a screen by yourself rather than at a table with other players. Read on for more information.
How to play table games in NY legally
While real money online table games are not legal in New York at present, they may become so very soon. You can find many different table games at the state’s land-based casinos. You can also play online table games in NY at some social and sweepstakes sites.
The other current option for New Yorkers wanting to play online table games is visiting New Jersey where online casinos are legal. You can create an account at a New Jersey site from New York, but to play the games, you’ll have to travel over the state line.
Online vs. in-person table games
Not only do online casinos feature many of the same table games you find in brick-and-mortar casinos, but they often play very similarly to their retail counterparts. The rules, odds and payouts are all usually the same, and with top-notch graphics, animation and sounds, the online table games even recreate the immersive experience of in-person play.
The main difference between the two is that playing table games in a casino often includes a social element not present when playing alone on your device. That said, some online live dealer games have introduced that more active component.
Here is a list of pros and cons comparing online table games to the experience of playing the same games in retail casinos.

List of casino table games for NY gamblers
Let’s talk more about the most popular casino table games among New York gamblers.
Blackjack (or “21”) is the classic casino card game in which the player competes against the dealer (or the house) to try to make the highest hand without going over 21. After being dealt two cards, players decide whether to hit and be dealt more cards or stand with what they’ve got. Players can also split their hand or double down, and sometimes can take insurance or surrender as well.
Beating the dealer usually wins a payout of 1-to-1 (even money), which means doubling your stake. However, if your first two cards total 21 and you make a natural blackjack, you win more. Depending on the casino, winning with blackjack earns you either a 3-to-2 or 6-to-5 payout.
New York blackjack casinos often offer additional side bets and other blackjack variants in games like Blazing 7’s Blackjack. Online blackjack games feature lots of different ways to play.
Craps is the famous dice game that often draws crowds of excited players and onlookers to the table. They’ll be rooting for certain outcomes surrounding that person rolling two dice (the “shooter”). There are many different ways to bet in craps, but the central idea involves everyone betting on the outcome of the dice rolls.
The rules for craps are somewhat involved, although the game is easy enough to learn quickly. Craps begins with the first dice roll, called the come out roll, on which players can bet the pass line or place a don’t pass bet. Depending on how that roll goes, the game might move to a second roll to determine outcomes. At this point, other bets like the come bet, the don’t come bet, the place bet or the field bet can come into play.
You might encounter other craps variations, too, when playing craps online or at a land-based venue. These include such variants as Crapless Craps, High Point Craps, Simplified Craps and even New York Craps.
The roulette wheel and board are a classic sight on most casino floors, with roulette counting as another favorite gambling game. Players bet on which numbered slot a ball will land when the wheel spins, with payouts adjusted according to the likelihood of bettors’ predictions being successful.
Players can bet on an individual number (1 through 36, plus zeroes), on the red or black numbers, on odd or even numbers or on groups of numbers (rows, columns, dozens and more). Bettors can also stick with outside bets that are less risky and have lower payouts or go for inside bets that are less likely to hit but pay big returns when they do.
As for variations, you’ll find American Roulette (with 0 and 00) and European Roulette (with just 0). When playing roulette online in NY (post regulation) you will also find many other roulette variants as well, including French Roulette, Double Bonus Spin Roulette and 100/1 Roulette.
Like roulette, baccarat is another table game that originated in Europe and found its way to the United States and around the world. It is a card game in which two hands are dealt and compared with each other. One hand belongs to the “player” and the other to the “banker,” and players can bet on either hand to win. They can also bet on a tie.
The object of the game is to get a point count as close to nine as possible. In baccarat, hand values are counted differently than in blackjack or poker. Aces equal one point, twos through nines each equal their rank, and 10s and face cards count zero. If the hand is worth 10 or more, only the right digit counts (e.g., if the hand adds up to 18, it equals 8 points). Players start with two cards, and there are rules governing whether the player and/or banker gets a third card as well.
Casinos offer many variants such as Mini Baccarat, Midi Baccarat, EZ Baccarat, Punto Banco, Chemin de Fer, Baccarat Banque and more.
Three Card Poker
Another popular casino table game is Three Card Poker, which involves competing against a dealer to see who can make the best three-card poker hand. The game is very simple, with just a single deal of three cards each to the player and dealer, both face down. The player then checks the hand and decides whether to bet more on it (thinking it will beat the dealer’s) or not to bet and simply fold. The dealer makes the same decision but has to stay with any hand ranked queen-high or better while the player has no such restriction.
There are additional side bets possible in Three Card Poker, such as the Pair Plus bet on whether you’ll make at least a pair in your three-card hand. There are other bonus bets you can make as well, including the 6 Card Bonus and Ante Bonus.
Let It Ride
Let It Ride is another card-based table game in which you try to make the best possible five-card poker hand. However, unlike in other games, you aren’t playing against a dealer (or the “house”), but rather trying to make a hand worth a pair of 10s or better.
There are three betting rounds. You are first dealt three cards. Then, you see a first and second community card to make your five-card hand. At each stage, you decide whether to “let it ride” and keep betting on your hand. In the end, if you haven’t made at least a pair of 10s, you lose. However, with a pair of 10s through aces, you double your money. And if you make bigger hands you win even more all the way up to 1,000-to-1 return on a royal flush.
Another popular poker-based table game is Mississippi Stud. In this game, players also try to make the best five-card poker hand. Like in Let It Ride, the payouts are determined by your ultimate hand strength and not whether you beat another player or the dealer.
After placing an initial wager, you are dealt two cards and must either fold or bet another one to three times your initial wager. From there, the dealer puts out three community cards, one at a time, to complete your five-card hand. There are two more betting rounds as well, one after each of the first two community cards, so you have to keep deciding whether to continue with your hand.
If you fail to make at least a pair of 6s, you lose. If you make a pair of 6s through 10s, the hand is a push and you get your bets back. If you make a pair of jacks, you double your money, and like with Let It Ride you win more money as your hand value increases, topping out at a 500-to-1 payout for a royal flush.
Ultimate Texas Hold’em
Also called Casino Hold’em or Texas Hold’em Bonus, this table game version of the popular poker variant pits players against a dealer. In Ultimate Texas Hold’em, you start out making two bets, the ante bet and what is called a blinds bet (or “blind bet”). You and the dealer then each receive two hole cards. You are then invited to add an additional play bet worth three or four times the ante bet, kind of like putting in a raise after seeing your hole cards.
The dealer next deals the first three community cards, and if you didn’t make the play bet you get another chance to make an additional bet (this time for 2x the ante). The dealer then reveals the last two community cards, and at that point (again, if you haven’t made any additional bets so far), you can either fold or bet 1x the ante. If you do bet, that’s when you and the dealer show your hole cards.
At showdown, the dealer has to have at least a pair to have a qualifying hand. If not, the ante bet is returned to you (considered a “push”) while the other bets remain in play. If your hand is best, you double your ante and play bets. Meanwhile, the blinds bet pays off according to your hand’s value, with a straight being the minimum to win anything (1-to-1) and a payout of 500-to-1 for a royal flush. Of course, if the dealer’s hand is best, you lose all bets. If your hands tie, all bets are a push.
There’s also an option to make a side bet before the deal called a trips bet. This is a bet on whether you’ll make three-of-a-kind or better, and it awards higher payouts according to your hand strength (up to 50-to-1 for a royal flush). There might also be side bets for a hole card bonus or a progressive jackpot you can play for if you like.
Pai Gow is another fun and entertaining card-based table game. Also called Pai Gow Poker, it’s a poker-based game in which players are dealt seven cards to form two poker hands: one with five cards and the other with two cards. The five-card hand has to rank higher than the two-card hand. Meanwhile, the dealer (representing the house) similarly sets two hands. When everyone is done, the cards are turned over.
The object of the game is to set both of your hands in a way that will beat the dealer’s two hands. If your five-card hand outranks the dealer’s five-card hand and your two-card hand beats the dealer’s two-card hand, you double your money. If you win only one of the two hands, it’s a push and you get your bet back. And if the dealer’s hands both beat yours, you lose. There are other rules and variations as well, such as Fortune Pai Gow Poker (with a bonus side bet).
As you can see, table games offer many ways to gamble in the casino beyond just playing slots. There’s a lot of variety among the games, too, with many different card games to go along with classics like roulette and craps.
Best table game odds to win real money
We all know the casino enjoys a “house edge” in every game it offers, which ensures the casino will come out ahead in the long run. But that doesn’t mean players can’t win in the short term. Additionally, some casino table games have a bigger house edge than others, which might be relevant to you when deciding which game to play.
Among table games, blackjack is known to have the lowest house edge for those who know how to play blackjack using basic blackjack strategy. Of course, if you deviate from that strategy, the house edge goes up. The number of decks also affects the house edge in blackjack (more decks means an increased edge).
Craps is another game where you can lower the house edge by sticking with certain kinds of wagers or increase it (by a lot) by placing riskier bets. In Three Card Poker, you dramatically increase the house edge if you play bad hands or make the additional Pair Plus bet. Meanwhile, roulette is a game where the house edge is quite large, and there’s nothing you can really do about it in terms of your betting decisions.
Here are some estimated ranges for the house edge on different casino table games:
- Baccarat — 1.2% to 1.6%
- Blackjack — 0.5% (or less) to 2%
- Craps — less than 1% to 16% (or higher)
- Let It Ride — 3.5%
- Mississippi Stud — 2.2%
- Pai Gow — 2.5%
- Roulette — 5.26%
- Three Card Poker — 3.4%
- Ultimate Texas Hold’em — 2.2%
By the way, that house edge for roulette refers to almost all of the available bets on a roulette board. There is one special bet in American Roulette—the “basket” bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3—where the house edge is even higher at almost 7.9%.
Again, these percentages are estimates. Depending on the game, player decisions and other factors impact the edge significantly. (That’s aside from roulette, where the house edge is fixed.)
Generally speaking, most of these table games have a lower house edge than slots, where the edge frequently lands in the 5-10% range. In any case, the situation with table games is much better than with keno, where the house edge is usually higher than 25%.
Casino table games tips and strategies
Part of your strategy when playing table games may involve paying attention to that house edge and selecting games accordingly. But you can also bring specific gambling strategies to most of the individual games to increase your chances.
Blackjack has its own basic strategy, as do other card games like Three Card Poker and Let It Ride. When it comes to the poker-based card games, you generally benefit from an understanding of the hand rankings, odds, probabilities, and payouts.
However, with a pure gambling game like roulette, you aren’t going to increase your chances of winning by following any particular strategy. With that sort of game, you should follow the same broader “strategy” you follow elsewhere in the casino: be smart and responsible when gambling, and only risk money that you can afford to lose.
Are online table games fair?
Legal real money online casinos are licensed and regulated just like brick-and-mortar casinos. For that reason, they are required to ensure all games are fair and run with integrity. Online casinos also must abide by rules regarding player security, including the security of personal information and banking.
As long as the site is legal and licensed in the jurisdiction where it operates, you can be certain the online casino table games are fair. If the site lacks such verification, such as some “offshore” online casinos, you have no assurances regarding game integrity or security.
Always gamble responsibly
Playing casino table games online or in person at a land-based venue can be hugely entertaining and a lot of fun. However, it is always important to know your limits and practice responsible gambling. Avoid the pitfalls of problem gambling and spending more time or money gambling than you should.

NY table games online FAQ
At legal real money online casinos that are licensed and regulated in the jurisdictions where they operate, you can win real money playing online table games. Additionally, some social and sweepstakes sites use virtual currencies that offer chances to redeem winnings for real money prizes.
Generally speaking, most online casinos that offer table games offer bonuses such as progressive jackpots or other rewards for playing certain games. Sometimes these online casino bonuses differ from the ones you find in retail casinos. Be sure whenever you play an online table game to check and see whether the game offers any bonuses.
You can play games like blackjack, baccarat, Pai Gow and other casino card games online at a variety of different sites. Real money online casinos usually offer a full menu of card-based table games that rivals or even exceeds what you find in retail casinos. Additionally, social and sweepstakes sites like Chumba Casino and Pulsz Casino feature blackjack, with Pulsz also offering a Texas Hold’em game.
When playing casino card games online, the games typically play very much like they do when playing in brick-and-mortar New York casinos. One big difference is that you are typically the only player at the “table” when playing online, whereas when playing live casino table games, you might be at a table with several other players.
Otherwise, gameplay is largely the same whether you’re playing blackjack, Three Card Poker, Let It Ride or other card games. You make the same types of bets, only instead of exchanging your chips at the casino cage later, you receive winnings directly through your online account.
Much like in retail casinos, blackjack is the most popular card game online. There are many standalone poker sites that are popular, too, especially outside the United States.
There are a few online poker sites operating in US states like New Jersey, but not in New York. Soon, however, New York may legalize online casinos, in which case you can be certain to find table games at these new NY online casinos.
