Global Poker’s online poker room uses a unique promotional sweepstakes system that allows players to legally claim cash prizes everywhere in the US and Canada, with the exception of Washington state and Quebec.
Parent company Virtual Gaming Worlds finalized the patent on its sweepstakes-based business model in 2020. The Australian-based company operates three additional sites on the same system: Chumba Casino, LuckyLand Slots and FendOff Sports, a social sports prediction site.
The system is easy enough to understand once you have the basics. Two virtual chips are used to play: Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins. Neither currency has any monetary value. However, Sweeps Coins are VGW’s legal, patented sweepstakes-entry equivalent that can legally earn cash prizes when entered in a sweepstakes drawing or game of chance.
In simple terms, this means that if you play Global Poker’s Texas Hold’em using Sweeps Coins stakes, you can redeem your winnings (also Sweeps Coins) for cash prizes. Gold Coins are used to play strictly for fun, and any winnings (also Gold Coins) can only be used for more gameplay.
We’ll cover the finer points of the system later on in this review, but for now, this is the kicker: To comply with sweepstakes laws, Sweeps Coins are always given away for free. You can’t buy Sweeps Coins, but you can buy Gold Coin packages, and Gold Coins packages come bundled with free Sweeps Coins.
Global Poker regularly gives away both types of virtual chips, on top of a sign-up bonus for new players. Use our links to sign up for your new account, and you will qualify for a $20 Gold Coin package absolutely free on account verification. The package comes with 100,000 Gold Coins bundled with 20 free Sweeps Coins.
Plus, on first purchase, you will qualify for a $40 Gold Coin package for just $20, which includes 200,000 Gold Coins bundled with 40 free Sweeps Coins. No promo code is necessary for either welcome bonus.

There are number of ways you can get small amounts of free Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins, but Global Poker’s giveaways are nowhere near the scale of promotional offers found on traditional, legal online poker sites.
Global Poker’s daily bonus will give you 0.25 Sweeps Coins and 1,000 Gold Coins just for logging in to your account. That can reach one Sweeps Coin and 2,500 Gold Coins if you log in every day for up to seven consecutive days. Click the “get coins” button in the top right corner of the page to open a new window and claim your daily bonus from the box at the bottom of the screen.
Global Poker sometimes holds giveaway contests for five Sweeps Coins on its Facebook page, and you will receive five Sweeps Coins if you write the company with a request. See the site’s terms and conditions for complete instructions on how to format your request.
Global Poker also sets achievements that offer Gold Coin prizes and the chance to win larger awards of Sweeps Coins and Gold Coins with entries into free-roll tournaments and invitations to buy in to special daily and weekly Sweeps Coin tournaments. Achievements require you to meet various milestones, such as playing 25 hands or seeing 50 flops.
You must be 18 or older and a resident of any US state other than Washington to open a Global Poker account. As long as you meet those qualifications, registration is pretty simple.
You can link your Facebook account to your Global Poker registration, or sign up directly with the site by entering your name, address, email, phone, date of birth and username. Note that you won’t be able to change your username once you register.
Once you’ve filled out the form, simply respond to a text message to verify your registration and receive your free $20 Gold Coin package welcome bonus.
In order for Global Poker to meet “know your customer” requirements, you will need to complete the full account verification process to make your first prize redemption, but you can complete it any time. Click the “buy now” button in the top right corner of the page and choose the “redeem prize” tab to start the process.
Global Poker licenses its poker app from longtime poker pro Cubeia Sweden. The poker client is entirely web-based, and can be accessed equally well from mobile browser for Android and Apple iOS devices and tablets, or web browser for PC and Mac laptops and computers. Multiple games can be played at the same time.
Account details that can’t be found by clicking on the “buy coins” button in the upper right corner of the page will be located under the hamburger icon in the top left corner of the page.
A new screen will open and display a long list of options on the left side of the page, including your Gold Coin/Sweeps Coin balances, leaderboard ranking, achievements and bonuses earned, details on challenges, available avatars, store to purchase special avatars and gameplay history sorted by date and time, including poker hands, casino game spins, blackjack hands and transactions.
The “settings” link will let you change deck and table colors and themes and alert tones, as well as others. Toggle the pro mode on to open tables in new windows. You can also choose to hide your pocket cards whether you are winning or losing a hand.
You will primarily find no limit Texas Hold’em ring games, sit and go’s and multi-table tournaments on Global Poker, with a limited number of Omaha and Crazy Pineapple tables available at times.
Global Poker’s lobby opens to ring games by default, but tables can be sorted by game, format (multi-table, sit and go or jackpot sit and go tournaments), stakes (micro, low, medium, high) and more.
To join a game, click on a table and a new window will open. Choose any available seat. Global Poker’s client is not as fancy as what you might find on other sites, but it’s functional. A chat client is available, along with hand history and a few preference settings.
Available poker games include:
Anywhere from 150 ring games can be found running around the clock, primarily no limit Texas Hold’em with about 40 or so Pot-Limit Omaha tables.
Over 80 Texas Hold’em SNG tables were running one evening mid-week, while thousands of players were seated at Texas Hold’em MTT tables. About half the ring tables for Pot-Limit Omaha are in use at any given time, along with eight weekly tournaments.
Although Crazy Pineapple is listed as an available option, the game can only be played during one weekly MTT. The Cool Pineapple progressive bounty, six-max tournament offers a guaranteed 500 Sweeps Coin prize on Thursday evenings. A buy-in of 11 Sweeps Coins is required.
Global takes a flat 5% rake on all tables, even for Gold Coins, which have no value. The only exception is jackpot SNG tournaments, which include a 6% rake built into the buy-in.
The site generally sees a steady influx of players around the clock, with higher stakes games more common during peak evening hours.
Global Poker draws players from a full spectrum of skill levels, from complete novices to professional poker players and everything in between. Global Poker advertises heavily on social media sites such as Facebook, which tends to draw large numbers of recreational poker players who are often brand new to the game. In turn, a large contingent of highly skilled poker players is also drawn to the site.
While playing games for Gold Coins may seem counterproductive, brand new players may want to at least get some practice with the poker client and get comfortable with the mechanics in a more laid back setting at first.
To play for Gold Coin stakes, click the “switch to Gold Coins” button in the top right corner of the page, or vice versa, to move between virtual currencies.
Global Poker’s Texas Hold’em MTTs start running anywhere from every hour and a half in the morning to every 15 minutes later in the day.
Global Poker’s largest MTT beings at 5:30 p.m. Eastern every Sunday. The Sunday Scrimmage has a 50,000 Sweeps Coin guaranteed prize and a buy-in of 218 Sweeps Coins.
Other regular tournaments with bigger payouts include the Saturday Swish with a 6,000 Sweeps Coin guaranteed prize and a buy-in of 55 Sweeps Coins; the Sunday Teaser with a 20,000 Sweeps Coin guaranteed prize and a buy-in of 110 Sweeps Coins; the Tuesday Tussle with a 10,000 Sweeps Coin guaranteed prize and a buy-in of 110 Sweeps Coins; and the Thursday Throttle with a 7,500 Sweeps Coin guaranteed prize and a buy-in of 110 Sweeps Coins.
If you don’t have the time to sit through an MTT, choose an SNG. You will find six- and nine-player SNG tables, with turbo or hyper-turbo rules that won’t take long at all.
Global Poker’s jackpot sit and go tournaments are hyper-turbo, three-player hold’em games with a randomly determined prize pool ranging from 2x to 10,000x your buy-in.
Winner takes all, unless your table gets the randomly assigned jackpot, in which case the winner will get three-quarters of the prize pool and the rest is split. With a buy-in of 20 Sweeps Coins, if your table draws the jackpot, you will be playing for a share of 200,000 Sweeps Coins.
Hold’em bounty tournaments award prizes or bounties for every player eliminated. At the end of the tournament, some players may have amassed bounties higher than the prize payouts.
Click the red “play now” button in the upper right corner of the lobby to play.
Flipping between two virtual currencies will probably seem confusing at first, and playing poker within sweepstakes law boundaries may always seem strange, but in the end, what does it matter? If you like to play poker against real players, you can do that right now on Global Poker from nearly every state in the country.
Here is how the system works in a nutshell: To meet sweepstakes laws, Sweeps Coins cannot be purchased, they must be given away for free. Gold Coin packages can be purchased, and free Sweeps Coins are given away with Gold Coin packages.
Another key point: Only Sweeps Coins won in poker games can be redeemed for cash prizes. Sweeps Coins that are given away have no value and cannot be redeemed for cash prizes.
Click the “buy now” button in the upper right corner of the page and choose the Gold Coin package you’d like to purchase.
Global Poker accepts Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit and debit cards, Skrill and online bank transfers.
Available Gold Coin packages include the following bundles:
|Gold Coins||Sweeps Coins||Cost|
High rollers may receive special clearance to purchase $2,000 packages that include 11 million Gold Coins bundled with 2,300 Sweeps Coins.
You can request a cash prize redemption when your winnings total at least 50 Sweeps Coins. Click the “buy now” button in the top right corner of the page, then choose the “redeem prize” tab to initiate your redemption request. If you haven’t already completed the account verification process, you will need to follow the prompts to clear that requirement first.
You can choose to receive your prizes in cash via online bank transfer or Skrill, or choose a gift card instead. Redemption requests are typically processed internally within 24 hours. Gift card redemptions are the fastest transactions. Note that Skrill may charge you a fee to process your redemption.
Global Poker does not offer a live chat client, but a comprehensive and easy-to-navigate frequently asked questions section and support ticket system maintained by ZenDesk will be able to field most questions and concerns. Alternatively, you can send an email to [email protected]
FAQ topics cover everything from getting started and general information, to account and cashier details, features and settings, and technical issues. you will find a section dedicated to responsible gaming, as well.
Novice to expert players will also benefit from useful tips and strategies found in Global Poker’s How to Play section and Poker School guides, many written by former PokerStars cardroom manager Lee Jones.
Licensed and regulated by the Malta Gaming Authority, Chumba Casino, VGW’s first sweepstakes-based internet casino enterprise, launched in 2012. Chumba, which offers a collection of in-house developed slots and table games, along with licensed third-party titles, was not widely available in the US until 2017.
While VGW’s attorneys continued to iron out the legal wrinkles in the pending patent, the company acquired the rights to Cubeia Sweden’s online poker platform and launched Global Poker in 2016.
FendOff Sports was launched the following year. A recent partnership with virtual sports provider Inspired Entertainment will help the site develop its sweepstakes-based sports prediction games.
