DraftKings DFS rewards

DraftKings’ rewards program allows users of its DFS and sportsbook sites to earn Crowns and redeem them for rewards. Here is a synopsis of how the program works.

DK Crowns

You accrue DraftKings Crowns, formerly Frequent Player Points, at a rate of one Crown for every $1 in contest entry fees. Crowns determine your monthly reward status, and you can use them to purchase contest tickets or merchandise from the DraftKings store.

Monthly rewards

The number of Crowns you earn in a month determines your reward status for the following month. Each day you can claim your daily rewards by logging in to the DraftKings DFS app or website. Here’s a breakdown of the six reward tiers, including how many Crowns you need to qualify and what the typical rewards are:

  • Bronze: 100-499 Crowns. Daily rewards are between two and five Crowns. Receive a few contest tickets, maxing out at $0.25.
  • Silver: 500-1,999 Crowns. Daily rewards usually land between five and 20 Crowns with contest tickets topping out at $0.25.
  • Gold: 2,000-9,999 Crowns. Daily rewards range from five to 50 Crowns. Contest tickets usually max out at $0.25 and you’ll sometimes receive $1 in DK Dollars.
  • Platinum: 10,000-24,999 Crowns. The lowest daily Crown total is 25. Contest tickets are rare, but you should get DK Dollars a handful of times in amounts ranging from $1-$3.
  • Diamond: 25,000-124,999 Crowns. No Crowns or contest tickets. You instead receive DK Dollars each day. The lowest denomination is $1; the max is usually $5. For the month you can expect to receive roughly $60-$70 in DK Dollars.
  • Black: 125,000 Crowns and above. Just like with the Diamond Tier, you receive only DK Dollars. The minimum daily amount is $5, and the max is $50. If you claim each day’s reward, you should expect to claim around $450 for the month.

Custom contests

DraftKings users can create their own custom contests.

  1. Select the sport.
  2. Choose the game style.
  3. Pick the start time, which determines the games that will be available to choose players from.
  4. Decide whether you want your contest to be private or open for any DraftKings users. On the same page, you also will select whether you want to have a head-to-head contest or multiplayer with three or more entrants.
  5. Now you decide on your entry details. For the entry fee you can pick anything from free to $10,600 per entry. If you choose multiplayer, you can pick from between three and 200 entrants. Depending on how big your contest is, you also will choose your payout structure. The last steps on this page are giving your contest a name and sending out invitations.
  6. The final step is checking that all your selections are correct and then clicking the “Create Contest” button.

Missions

DraftKings DFS also has daily missions for users. After opting in to your mission, you will receive a reward if you complete it. A mission can be as simple as “Play in any $1+ contest.” If you complete this particular mission, you could receive between 15 and 30 Crowns.

You’ll notice that the site will tailor missions to your betting habits. If you tend to play in $10 contests, your missions will be around that entry point. If you play in $1 contests, your missions will be around that number.

Achievements

DraftKings also has what it calls “Achievements” for all available sports on the site. Achievements allow you to accrue rewards all season long.

For example, during the 2020-21 NBA season, if you played a $1+ NBA contest on 131 days, you would receive the title of DraftKings Fantasy Basketball Ironman and 25,000 Crowns. Not only would that place you in the Diamond rewards tier for the following month, but those 25,000 Crowns would be good for 45 entries into $1 contests.

You’ll also find achievements based on how well your players do and whether you’re able to get some bargains along the way.

Downloading and using the DraftKings DFS app

While you can enter contests and draft teams from the DraftKings website, the app makes it even easier to do so. The apps are free and available for iOS and Android devices, and they take just a couple of minutes install.

To get the app, head to the DraftKings DFS site and scroll to the bottom of the page where you will see buttons for Apple and Android. Choose the appropriate button for your device and follow the prompts from there to install the app.

Using the DraftKings DFS app

The app is very user friendly, but one complaint we do have is that it looks and functions differently across different devices. For example, the iPad and Android smartphone versions look nothing alike when it comes to the main interface.

This should not be a major problem even if you will be using different devices to access the app. It just means you’ll need to get familiar with where things are located on each version.

When you’re looking to enter a contest, you’ll want to select “Browse Lobby.” Next you can choose the sport, the game style, the slate and finally the contest you want to enter. When searching for a contest, it helps to click on the “Filter” button. Now you can sort according to entry fee size, the type of contests and more.

When you find a contest to enter, you can draft your team immediately or reserve your spot. Reserving a spot is a great way to make sure you don’t miss out on a contest before it fills up. But be warned, once the contest fills all the way up, you will not be able to withdraw your entry. Additionally, if you forget to draft your team before the contest starts, you will get a zero and not receive any money back.

How do I sign up at DraftKings Daily Fantasy?

Creating a DraftKings DFS account is very easy to do. You can sign up using your Facebook account or by entering your email and date of birth, selecting the state you live in and confirming you’re 18 or older.

You’ll also need to create a username, which you will not be able to change, and create a password. That’s all there is to it, though.

States that don’t allow DraftKings Daily Fantasy Sports

DraftKings DFS is currently not legal in Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Washington state and Hawaii. Arizona and Louisiana are in the process of allowing daily fantasy sports in their states.

The minimum age to legally participate in daily fantasy sports in most states is 18. However, in Alabama and Nebraska you must be 19 years old, and in Iowa and Massachusetts you must be 21. It also appears that 21 will be the age requirement in Louisiana.

DFS contests at DraftKings Fantasy

There are a number of daily fantasy sports contests that DraftKings users can enter.

  • Guaranteed prize pools (GPPs): These contests go off whether they fill up or not. Users pay their entry fee and compete for a predetermined prize pool.
  • Head-to-heads: Two players enter and the winner receives the entire prize pool.
  • 50/50: Similar to head-to-heads except these contests have much bigger fields. Just under half of the field will double their entry fee. Also called double-ups, these contests are great if you’re just getting started.
  • Leagues: You can join an existing league or create your own at DraftKings. League sizes range from three to 50, and depending on the size it can be winner-take-all or payouts for the top three to five players.
  • Multipliers: These contests pay out a large amount (usually being three and 10 times) to a small number of players. For example a $10 contest with 35 entrants could pay out $100 apiece to the top three finishers. Everyone else gets nothing.
  • Satellites and qualifiers: Both of these contests allow you to win your way into bigger contests with even bigger prizes. These can be great if you want to enter more expensive contests but don’t have the budget for it.

Sports available at DraftKings

DraftKings has a variety of options for DFS. There’s no question that the NFL is the most popular, but you also can choose from the NBA, MLB, NHL, PGA and European Tour, soccer (MLS, Premier League, UCL), UFC, NASCAR, college football and basketball, and even esports (League of Legends).

Types of contests available at DraftKings DFS

Gone are the days of just having one DFS contest. Here is what you can try at DraftKings:

  • Classic: These are your “old-school” contests where you draft players from a number of games staying under the $50,000 salary cap.
  • Tiers: Tiers contests do not involve a salary cap. Instead you receive a limited number of players to choose from in several tiers. These contests can be great if you enjoy picking from star players and not having to worry about finding hidden value.
  • Single-game showdowns: If you just want to focus on one game, then showdowns are for you. You still have to stick to a salary cap, but position requirements no longer exist. Showdowns involve drafting a captain who costs 1.5x the regular salary, but the captain’s points also are multiplied by 1.5, so draft accordingly.
  • Snakes: If you love the feeling of participating in a fantasy draft, DraftKings’ snake contests help replicate that. Snake drafts begin as soon as they receive enough entries. The draft order is random, and you get 30 seconds to make your pick. The biggest difference from fantasy leagues is that there are no trades or other roster management allowed.

Roster construction by sport

Note that these roster requirements are for classic contests. Rosters for showdowns, tiers and snake contest vary based on the sport.

  • NFL: QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, WR, TE, Flex, Defense/Special teams
  • NBA and WNBA: PG, SG, SF, PF, C, G, F, Utility
  • MLB: P, P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF
  • NHL: C, C, W, W, W, D, D, G, Utility
  • Golf: Six golfers
  • Esports: TOP, JNG, MID, ADC, SUP, FLEX, Team
  • MMA: Six fighters
  • CFL: QB, RB, WR, WR, Flex, Flex, Defense/Special teams
  • NASCAR: Six drivers

History of DraftKings DFS

DraftKings was founded in 2012 by Jason Robins, Paul Liberman and Matt Kalish in Boston.

The initial DraftKings DFS contest took place on opening day of the 2012 Major League Baseball season. One year later, MLB became one of the first leagues to invest in a DFS company when it did so with DraftKings.

DraftKings took another step forward when it acquired DraftStreet in July 2014. At the time, DraftKings was the second-largest DFS site and DraftStreet the third largest. FanDuel was No. 1 at the time.

Despite engaging in heated battles for DFS supremacy, there was actually talk of a merger between DraftKings and FanDuel in 2017. Before it could move forward, though, the Federal Trade Commission said it would not allow a merger because it would create a DFS monopoly.

Reasons to play DFS at DraftKings

For starters DraftKings offers so many sports, contest types and entry sizes that it’s hard to imagine there isn’t something for everyone. Even if you want to play for free, that’s an option.

We also love the DraftKings rewards program. It’s great that you get benefits for how much you spend on entry fees, and the daily rewards, mission and achievements are arguably even better. When done correctly, users can win quite a bit just for participating in DraftKings DFS contests.

Is DraftKings the best DFS site?

We’re not breaking any news when we say the question of which DFS site is the best comes down to just DraftKings and FanDuel right now. It’s also pretty much impossible to decide which is better.

DraftKings helped differentiate itself years ago when it eliminated kickers from NFL contests. Some users loved the change while others hated it. It really was all about personal preference. And the same is still true today. Deciding which site is better is all about personal taste because you really can’t go wrong with either.
