Record-Breaking December Closes Out Historic 2023 For NY Sports Betting

New York online sportsbooks closed out 2023 with a bang, setting a new monthly revenue record in December and taking in more than $2 billion in legal bets for the third straight month.

All told, NY sportsbooks reported over $188.3 million in gross gaming revenue last month, according to data from the New York State Gaming Commission. December’s NY sports betting total bested the previous monthly high of $166.3 million set in October 2023.

NY sports betting wraps up huge 2023

Online sportsbook operators in the Empire State reported nearly $1.7 billion in NY sports betting revenue in 2023.

Sports gamblers in New York wagered over $2.04 billion in December, just missing the all-time monthly high of $2.1 billion set the previous month. According to NYSGC data, online sportsbooks accepted over $19.1 billion in legal bets in 2023.

Online sports betting in NY generated more than $96 million in taxes in December and over $861.8 million for the year.

New York sports betting breakdown

The two largest US online sports betting operators also dominate the New York market.

FanDuel Sportsbook NY reported revenue of $93.6 million from almost $834.6 million in bets last month. DraftKings Sportsbook NY generated $65.2 million and a monthly handle of $773.4 million.

Caesars Sportsbook NY leapfrogged its main competitor, BetMGM, in both revenue and handle in December. Caesars took just under $202 million in legal wagers last month, netting $15.9 million in NY sports betting revenue. Meanwhile, BetMGM Sportsbook NY posted a handle of $126.5 million with monthly revenue of $8.1 million.

Rush Street Interactive’s BetRivers Sportsbook NY reported a handle of $50.7 million and monthly revenue of $3 million.

Fanatics Sportsbook NY generated $2.6 million in revenue from $28.6 million in wagers, according to state data.
