August 2022 NY sports betting handle

As football season kicks into full swing, online sports betting in New York is already back on the upswing.

According to data released by the New York State Gaming Commission on Friday, NY sports betting operators combined for $872.2 million in handle during the month of August, nearly $72 million more than the previous month.

And with college football and the NFL getting underway, we could easily see the Empire State get back to its billion-dollar ways. Perhaps even $2 billion.

NY sports betting on pace for $18 billion in 2022

Factoring in the latest New York sports betting revenue numbers, the Empire State has generated over $10.2 billion in handle through eight months.

As it stands, the industry is on pace to reach $18 billion by year’s end if you examine how other state’s with legal sports betting have performed during the fall.

If all goes well, New York — the fastest state to post $1 billion in monthly handle following launch — could conceivably become the first jurisdiction to surpass $2 billion before 2022 comes to a close. Perhaps even as soon as October.

Regardless, it might be safe to say that August will be the last month falling below $1 billion for some time in New York, which began the year with six straight months of going over that number.

Here’s a shocker: FanDuel Sportsbook NY paced the NY sports betting industry in August with $374.6 million in handle for nearly 43% of the market.

Of note, BetMGM Sportsbook NY and Caesars New York reported their lowest months in terms of handle since going live in January. That said, within the next few weeks, BetMGM will become the fourth online sportsbook in New York to eclipse $1 billion in lifetime handle.

Lastly, in its second month of operation, Bally Bet NY went over $1 million for the first time.
