Maximizing the ESPN Bet welcome offer

On your first bet, any wager of $10 or more triggers the ESPN Bet welcome offer. It’s a no-sweat bet that works like a mulligan in golf. If you lose the bet, you’ll receive a do-over, with the original stake replaced in your player account. Lose a $20 bet and the rebate is $20. Lose a $200 bet and the rebate is $200 … all the way up to $1,000.

When making the first bet, be certain it’s for -200 or longer odds. For instance, a bet on a -205 favorite or a -500 favorite does not qualify for the welcome bonus offer. Bets on a -200 or -110 favorite would work. Obviously, all plus-money bets (i.e., on underdogs) would count.

Also, you can’t use the welcome bonus offer for round-robin bets. Make certain the bet settles within 30 days because the welcome offer has a 30-day expiration date on it.

Is ESPN Bet Sportsbook legal in New York?

Yes. The New York State Gaming Commission has extended a license to ESPN Bet Sportsbook for online and mobile sports betting. Since 2021, the online sportsbook formerly known as Barstool has partnered with Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady. If you want to make deposits or withdrawals to your ESPN Bet account at a brick-and-mortar location, the cashier cage at Rivers Casino & Resort is the spot.

Furthermore, ESPN and the longtime US land-based gaming venue operator Penn Entertainment have partnered to create ESPN BET. The two signed a nearly $2 billion deal giving life to the ESPN Sportsbook, so it is a legal, licensed, and legitimate sports betting operation.

ESPN BET NY app and rating (4.2/5)

ESPN Bet’s mobile experience differs according to the device you use. We experienced no major issues with either device, but other users did. The ESPN Bet app rating on the App Store is 4.7, while the rating on the Google Play Store is 3.7. Some complained that the parlay builder tool updates too quickly on Android, so it often refreshes the bet and forces users to start over.

Below, we’ll break down some key categories of app performance.

  • Ease of logging in: 4.3/5 – Logging in is the same process on the iPhone and Android apps, using fingerprints or facial recognition.
  • Ease of placing bets: 4.1/5 – The iOS app works well and has high ratings, while the Android app could use some improvements.
  • Overall speed: 4.4/5 – The in-game betting page updated with no lag time during our visits, but some complain that odds load slowly.
  • Ability to place parlays: 4.2/5 – The Android parlay tool updates too fast, which makes it hard to make parlay bets via Android devices. The iOS app works fine.
  • Ability to place single-game parlays: 4.2/5 – Again, single-game parlays using Android sometimes require a bettor to start over, but SGPs on iPhone don’t have that problem.
  • Overall: Bettors using iPhones and iPads should do fine, but Android users might have some issues.

ESPN Bet Sportsbook vs. FanDuel Sportsbook

ESPN Bet beats FanDuel when it comes to standard odds but comes up a bit short with ongoing promotions. The daily boosts are almost identical, though FanDuel has a standard 30% daily boost whereas ESPN Bet sometimes has 25% boosts. This gives FanDuel the edge on promotions and same-game parlays.

As for overall odds, in our analysis of NFL game markets, the two sites had the same odds about 40% of the time. ESPN Bet had better odds about 36% of the time, and FanDuel had better odds about 24% of the time.

FanDuel has the edge in technology. While the experience on iPhone and iPad is equivalent, ESPN Bet’s Android app lowers its rating. Some people complain that ESPN Bet’s desktop odds load too slowly, though that wasn’t our immediate experience during testing.

Live betting options at ESPN betting app

The live betting page doesn’t have a gamecast feature that tracks plays, but it’s functional, competent, and fast. The top of the page has the various live betting events. Choose live betting by sport; baseball, football, and basketball games are easy to isolate. The selection is global in nature, as we found cricket, tennis, volleyball, and soccer odds updating in real time.

The live updates come in a box score format, so you’ll see the score of the game and the clock (or innings) for any live games. Next to the updated score, you’ll find spreads, totals, and moneyline bets that also update in real time.

For instance, we found a live game between the New York Mets and Los Angeles Angels. The live scoreboard showed it was the bottom of the 6th inning. It also had the ball and strike count, plus the number of outs. The spread and moneyline bets updated as the game progressed.

Some online sportsbooks have gamecasts similar to the ESPN Gamecast feature, so bettors get a virtual representation of each play. ESPN Bet doesn’t have that, but given the link to ESPN, it would not be surprising if such a feature was soon added.

To the right side of the page, a bet slip lets bettors easily fill out parlay bets and make straight bets. On the left of the page, bettors can find a list of featured events and a full list of sports. The sports offering live betting at that instant have an all-caps “LIVE” in red letters by them. This gives users an alternative way to quickly find live betting events.

How to add funds or cash out

Bettors have seven options when they want to make a deposit at ESPN Bet. Later, when it’s time to receive winnings, the site supports six payout methods. Here is the overview of deposit and payout options, along with a few notes.

New Yorkers can use credit cards, but they should know that credit card deposits are restricted when they’re visiting Massachusetts, Tennessee, and Iowa. MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and MyCash are acceptable payment methods. MyCash MasterCard credit cards are associated with Penn Entertainment. When used at ESPN Bet, they help build up MyCash rewards for Penn Entertainment’s retail sportsbook venues.

If your PayPal deposits fail, ESPN Bet suggests that account name mismatches are a common reason. If you have this issue, update your PayPal account profile to match the name on your ESPN Bet account. Another recurring issue is players trying to use multiple PayPal accounts, so try the site’s suggested “single account linking” to work around this issue. If you have further issues, call 1-855-550-1238 to speak to support.

When using ACH or e-Check, you’ll use the VIP Preferred program to make payments or receive payouts. This lets you make payments from a US bank account. If you have issues, call VIP Preferred at 1-800-500-1973.

Then, Play+ is a program that lets you instantly deposit funds to your account using a debit card, a bank account, or PayPal. Apple Pay helps bettors deposit using a debit card, but the service only works on Apple devices. Apple Pay is a deposit method, but cannot be used for withdrawals.

Finally, some banks do not allow online gaming transactions. While ESPN Sportsbook doesn’t block you, it might be your bank prohibiting the transaction. If this happens with a debit card or Apple Pay, consider using a different payment method.

How to contact ESPN Bet customer service in New York

Visit the bottom of the homepage to click a link that says “Support.” Then, find the “Account Information” section. The next page should have four frequently asked questions, including one that says “Contact Us.”

Click on that link to find the ESPN Sportsbook contact page. This offers a phone option, a chat option, and an email option. In all three cases, you begin the contact by clicking on the appropriate link. In the case of a phone call or live chat, you ask a question and receive a reply (the callback via phone).

In the case of the email, you’ll be directed to an email form. Input your question with a subject and email address, and the customer relations staff will contact you as soon as possible (usually within 24 hours). The chat option and the callback are the quickest options. These occur within a matter of minutes.

ESPN Bet has a call center for users who have PayPal and Play+ troubles: 1-855-550-1238. If you have trouble making a VIP Preferred payment via ACH or e-check, call the VIP Preferred program at 1-800-500-1973.

How to set limits at ESPN Bet

ESPN Bet has a number of tools that help users self-exclude and set responsible gaming limits. You can limit time spent on the site, spending within a certain window, deposit size, losses within a certain window, or single-wager size. Once you hit any limit, ESPN Bet logs you out and won’t let you participate until the allotted time period has passed.

In all cases, you can choose to limit yourself on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. You won’t be able to change any limit once it’s set. That time period has to end before you can alter the parameters.

Also, ESPN Sportsbook has a “cool-off” option. This lets you self-exclude for a length of time between three days and three months. Again, once you’ve set the cooling-off period, you won’t be able to gamble on ESPN Bet until that time has passed.

All of these tools can be useful to players who want to be vigilant about their betting, and we’re glad ESPN Bet takes responsible gambling seriously.

ESPN Sportsbook in-person betting locations and partnerships

ESPN Bet has a partnership with the Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady, New York. Bettors can visit the Rivers Casino to deposit cash or withdraw winnings from their ESPN Bet accounts. Rush Street Gaming owns Rivers Casino, but it entered a deal with Penn Entertainment in 2021 to create this partnership between the retail sportsbook and the online sportsbook.

ESPN BET Sportsbook New York FAQ

ESPN BET doesn’t require a bonus code to claim its welcome bonus of up to $1,000 in bet insurance on your first wager.

No, but you can make ESPN BET deposits and withdrawals at the Rivers Casino Schenectady’s cashier cage. Rivers Casino is the land-based partner for ESPN Bet, meaning it’s how the site gained its sports betting license in New York State.

No, you don’t. ESPN Sportsbook has apps for Android and Apple iOS devices, but it also works for desktop and browser bettors.

When we started our evaluation, the consensus was that FanDuel and DraftKings have better odds than ESPN Bet. That’s not the case, though. A deep analysis showed that ESPN Bet had the same point spreads as DraftKings on NFL games about 40% of the time.

In the remainder of cases (non-NFL), ESPN Bet had better odds than either of its more famous rivals on a 3-to-2 basis. Also, for those who bet the over/under on games, ESPN Bet consistently sets its over/under at a 0.5 point over DraftKings’ totals. If you tend to bet the over on totals, it’s best to use ESPN Bet.

Just like the SportsCenter commercials indicate for ESPN writ large, the corporate headquarters of ESPN Bet are in Bristol, Connecticut. The other partner in the ESPN Sportsbook is Penn Entertainment, based in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. ESPN is a massive sports broadcasting company, while Penn Entertainment owns dozens of brick-and-mortar casinos and race tracks in 17 states.

New Yorkers can bet on most college sports contests, though New York State gambling laws have some restrictions. People inside New York’s borders will not be able to bet on in-state teams, like Syracuse, Army, the Buffalo Bulls, the Albany Great Danes, Fordham, Cornell, Columbia, or Stony Brook.

At the same time, New York doesn’t have restrictions on out-of-state teams playing in the state of New York. If two out-of-state teams are playing in New York in the Big East or Atlantic 10 conference tournaments, or if Madison Square Garden is hosting an NIT or NCAA tournament game, you can bet on that game.
